The Runaways Features Twilight Star

Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett

Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett

I am super psyched to see that Kristen Stewart is playing Joan Jett in the new movie, The Runaways, a coming of age flick depicting the band of same name.

Dakota Fanning is slated to play Cherie Curie. This promises to be a real bag of fun.

The film features the raucus group of 16 year old girls that comprised the original band.

The Runaways was Joan Jett’s first band, and featured singer Lita Ford, played by Alessandra Toressani. Hits like Cherry Bomb made this band an iconic punk band of the 70’s.

The movie will definitley rock. As will the music. I have been a fan for over a decade. Yay! Film is scheduled to release in 2010.

LOVE Kathy Griffin!

“It turns out that I have a way hotter body than she does, and that’s been tough for her.” So says Kathy Griffin of Paris Hilton. You go Kathy for being a total cougar. Word up.

Jessica Simpson Slims Down with 5 Factor Diet

Jessica Simpson's latest slimdown is attributed to the 5 Factor Diet

Jessica Simpson was recently under scrutiny for putting on weight. Unflattering pictures abounded, calling her fat and claiming she had gained up to 30 lbs. Jessica spoke up saying she was proud of her body, no matter what weight, but then mere months later surfaced with what looks like 15 lbs off her tiny 5’2 frame. What gives? How did she shed the weight so quickly?

Like many celebs, Jessica Simpson turned to celebrity trainer and nutritionist to the stars, Harley Pasternak, author of Five Factor Diet. I went out and purchased his latest read, and took a look for myself.

Poor Jess has yo-yo'd before, women around the globe TOTALLY empathise!

Poor Jess has yo-yo'd before, women around the globe TOTALLY empathise!

Five Factor Diet, by Harley Pasternak, has been growing in popularity – due, in part, to celebrities like Jessica Simpson, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Eva Mendes, Katherine Heigl, Hillary Duff and John Mayer using the plan.

What is it about, and is it a good program?

The 5 Factor Fitness plan was first published in 2004. The Five Factor Diet is the follow-up.

It’s all about fives: 5 meals a day, 5 workouts a week each made up of 5 exercises… You get the picture.

The Five Criteria for Diet
5factordiet.jpg

At each meal:

  1. low-fat quality protein
  2. low- to moderate- glycemic index carbohydrate
  3. fiber
  4. healthy fat
  5. sugar-free beverage

Sundays are a “cheat day” – essentially eating what you want. The book contains a few basic sample meal plans and a selection of recipes for each meal. I must say, I happen to think that the recipes are excpetional. Simple and tasty, so this is a huge plus of the diet, and really great for anyone who cooks.

The Five Factor Workout
The following variables are shifted every week: Type of exercise (strength training, cardiovascular, core movements), Repetitions, Sets, Resistance level, and Rest Periods.

Equipment: Only Dumbbells and a bench required.

Phases (Total 25 minutes)

  1. Cardio Warm-up
At 65-85% of maximum heart rate – for 5 minutes.
  2. Strength Training
Each day has two different exercises (superset). Sets, reps and rest are altered each week. This is actually meant to total 10 minutes.
  3. Core Exercises
This includes various crunches and twists – with varying rep, set, and rest ranges. For 5 minutes.
  4. Cardio
The cooldown. Author Pasternak believes this will help alleviated DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). Minimum 5 minutes.

The book is interspersed with testimonials (including that of Halle Berry whom the author claims was the inspiration to write the book). Harley denounces yo-yo dieting, and says that this is a lifestyle plan, not a diet where you lose weight rapidly and gain the weight back after because it’s not a regimen that can be sustained.

A point to note, if you are trying to lose a considerable amount of weight, you may need to do quite a bit more cardio. Expending more calories than you take in is the key to weight loss, so those of you, like me, who have more than 20 lbs to take off will need to kick it up a notch and add some additional cardio. Ask any trainer, and they will say that weight training is great to increase your metabolic output long term, but short term, cardio is the key. This superset weight training idea keeps your heart rate up, so that makes it effective cardio AND muscle building, but again- those trying to lose a considerable amount of weight will need to add additional cardio session. Walking on incline or slow jog 45-60 minutes a s day is a great way to shed fat.

Conclusion
On the whole it’s a fairly concise, well-explained fitness program. Just bear in mind one thing: The celebrities have the fitness trainer (Pasternak) working alongside them. That is always going to be superior to having a book on the floor next to you. Duh.

On a personal note, I have begun to incorporate some of these ideas into my Body for Life plan, so I will let you know how it works, and if the diet is going to allow me to continue to successfully lose weight. As always, I take what works for me, and incorporate good ideas into my diet plans to come to an evolution that gives me the best way to lose weight and get fit. This is, other than Body for Life, one of the best and most sound diets I have seen out there. And the food is healthy and tasty. That’s always a plus! Go to Amazon or Barnes and Noble to purchase the book yourself.

Gyminee

I recently started using Gyminee.com, it’s a weight loss tool and social networking site. It’s a similar concept as the bodybugg, just free. I love that. Check it out. I currently have a challenge on there if you are interested. I want to hear your success stories and feature you!!

GYMINEE2

Gyminee is a fun and effective way to track your progress (inches and pounds lost), log your food and schedule and track workouts. Gyminee lets you log in your weight as frequently as you wish and will graph the changes for you. It’s a lot of fun to visually see your goals in action. The nutrition log has thousands of foods, and you can choose what you are eating, Gyminee.com will log it, and show you the calories for each food with a breakdown of the fat, carbs and protien in each. It’s super cool, plus it will make a pie chart of your nutritional breakdown, which is easy to see where your calories are going.

Follow this link to see my food log for the day and an example of the pie chart:

Gyminee.com is a great tool, and also offers an online community. I am a big believer in support throughout this process. I know that on days like today (when I wake up tired and hungry and just want to say forget it to my diet and exercise) I need the support more than ever.weightloss1

Jessica Alba’s Post Baby Body

OK, so I need to stop for a second here and say that Jessica Alba looks absolutely amazing for just having had a baby, my daughter is 3 and I am not anywhere near as fit as she is. She only gained 25 pounds total and since she exercised during her pregnancy, it was easier for her body to bounce back. I am always curious what celebs do to keep up their fitness level, and if they know any tricks that I am not aware of, so here’s the deal:

In an issue of US Weekly, her trainer Ramona Braganza sums up how this celeb got her body back in shape. Here are the highlights:

Her diet: Each day, Jessica eats between 1,700 and 2,000 calories, and her workouts help burn 550 calories. Nursing also burns an additional 500 calories a day.

Her workouts: Jessica works out for an hour, five or six days a week. She was big into the 12-week 3-2-1 Baby Bulge Be Gone workout since it kept her moving with 10-minute sets of cardio, circuit training, and core training. She also enjoys swimming, weight lifting, and using her treadmill at home.

Now that Jessica’s back to her pre-baby body, she feels proud and isn’t shy about showing off her body. It’s nice to hear that she wasn’t working out crazy hours or excessively restricting her diet. An hour a day for a workout may seem like a lot for a new mom, but as you can see, it really made a difference to this new mom. I say good for her. This program is something that is doable for anyone who makes it a priority.
